....adrift.....

Master of the Universe....we were doing so well.....at least that is what I thought.

Lisa, Adam, Danielle and I ....our little ship....we were putting in the effort....like so many others....It is not for me to know your ways...but we were each working hard....all at our own pace....I was trying to be sensitive to the fragile and most delicate balance needed to maintain shalom in our home....all the while trying to steer the tiny craft that is my family towards you.....That is why it is so difficult to wrap my arms around this....

It is not for me to be angry....and as my grandmother Fannie Birenbaum of blessed memory would at times caution me...."don't be a chuchum"....in other words ....don't be a "wise alec"....this of course is not my intent.

I never wanted to take anything for granted....we have been so blessed by your munificence and kindness..... I have wept tears of joy on my long walks to shul for many years now.... hoping to one day earn the right to live b'emzah...in the very center of "the community" at the right time and not before.....

Cold...rain...snow...I never cared...my heart soared on these long journeys to and from Shul...at other times my heart ached a bit, (and at times a little more than a bit), as my beautiful son Adam silently soldiered on by my side....Adam never complained Hashem...he never wavered....no one else I know would do it...could do it?!?! ...anyone who might taste it would think it unthinkable...meshuganah....I fully understand that....I do not say this brashly cofsah shalom...G-d forbid....its just....

And Lisa and Danielle.....we were all moving closer to you....at our own speed.....Shabbos and Yom Tovim were beautiful..... And then this thunderbolt ...this blast from heaven...it has come at us without warning....and it was such a direct hit....we we were woefully unprepared...the tiny craft that carried my family has been destroyed....in its entirety.

I see now that we will have to learn to navigate anew..... We are physically scattered now....not in the same way as when you send off a child for a summer program....a year abroad....university studies.... We WANT to be together ......we had been together....our small and humble team....yet we are now adrift.....longing to be as one....

If my memory serves me correctly Hashem.....you used the word teva only twice in the entirety of your holy Torah. You used it first as this was the basket moshe rabbainu was floating in when he was lifted from the Nile.... the second time was when Noah's family set sail with your precious animals....

I am heartened by this as neither of these tevas had a system of navigation other than...You... The Ribbono Sh'Olam. I surrender to you Hashem....I beseech you to hear us and please help us....my family surrenders ourselves fully and completely to your most awesome navigational skills....we know they are like no other. This is well beyond the medical emergency that has brought me here.....we thought we were sailing in placid seas....but you wanted for us to sail higher.

I am again heartened by what Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler of blessed memory has said in his magnificent work Strive For Truth.... Rabbi Dessler says that it is at exactly these moments ....at exactly these times that we are given the gift of our greatest potentiality..... Rabbi Dessler says that "in the falling is the rising"....that "in the darkness is the light".....absent our old small ship...we are swimming towards you Hashem all the same... the tears that have been streaming down the faces of my family.....these are not tears of sadness....well maybe some of them are.....but mostly all of them are the tears of the love we have for one another....the raw and real desire to be closer than ever before....I dream to be a more elevated ezer kenegdo...a more elevated helper who is my equal to the love of my life...my precious Lisa....

I dream of being a more elevated father....the best father to my fine and most special son Adam the world has ever seen......and of course I dream of being a more elevated father to my precious Danielle....the best father since the beginning of time.

Lisa, Adam, Danielle I love you with every part of my being. We no longer have a ship but the sparks within our neshamas are the same so we still sail together. Sleep well in Philadelphia my precious children....sleep well in NYC my most blessed Lisa.

I love you VERY much,

sleep well
papa

Michael, As I'm leaving for work that I have taken for granted for so long, I stopped myself to see if you posted anything. My thoughts are with you throughout my day, as is with your entire family from my entire family. This is what I found for you today, "Remember you are not the body. Neither are you the animal that pounds within the body, demanding its way in every thing. You are a G-dly soul. Do not confuse the pain and struggle of the body with the joy and purity of the G-dly soul."\

    Be well,

  3. Michael,
We know you from the many Aish conferences and are praying for you every day. We read your words each day and they remind us of what's really important in life-- service to Hashem, family, relationships...
Mitch was in Dr. Sheinfeld's capable hands AT SK ten years ago after undergoing a similar surgery. He never looked at his cancer as the "enemy," but as something that was part of him but had to go because that's the way G-d wanted it to be. He felt better coming from place of love than from anger.
Your ship is in rough water, off course-- but it is very much afloat and will reach its destination safely BH".

  4. Michael,
This is your mountain that you must climb. the time starts now. You are right in everything you say, I was waiting for those words, for i have heard them, tasted them , felt the frustration.
You will and must soldier on, with Hashem's help.
All of those walks on Shabbos with Adam, your son by your side, draw comfort from them now...maybe that is Hashems gift to you now...
Remember the journey, embrace it,and know that though you may feel adrift in your boat we all have our paddles in and are rowing along side you.
    With love and contined prayers,

  5. Michael,

Such a touching and poignant commentary on your life and the life of your family. The strength that you are able to draw upon is inspiring, to say the least. We hope and pray that you are returned to full, good personal health and that your loving family is once again restored to its powerful unity. What a father and husband you are.

    Love, Jon & Louise

  6. Boker Tov Mr. Wachs!!!
First, let me say this: you will never be adrift....though the four of you may be away from eachother physically at times, you are ONE HERATthat will beat as one FOREVER! Yes, your mountain is yours to climb alone, but in one way....the hardest way, of course. Yet, with the strength of your precious and devoted family, and the tefilot and love of so many who love you, you will climb. You have challenged yourself to very phisycal and dangerous climbs.......here, Hashem is challenging you to the climb he has put before you.....but HE is with you, pushing you and giving you strength and Emunah that you will never lose.
Take a little comfort in the knowledge that you are never too far from our thoughts and your words are making us all reflect and try to be better people. In that Zechus, Michael, may your refuah come quickly and fully!

Love- "Mrs. Frankel" , Marc and the kids.

  7. Michael,

I am sure you know that your words, filled with the pain and loss of the symmetry and predictability of "what was", nevertheless, resonate in our hearts and souls. In varying degrees, we have all experienced the paradigm shift that occurs when our worlds get turned upside down! But, yours, my dear brother, are particularly poignant because you feel so deeply and your family has been blessed by your genetically and familial-transmitted love to each member of your family. It is hard, at these times, as the long road of recovery stretches before you after the first few difficult steps have been taken, to see the rainbow at the end of the road. But, my dear Michael, it is there and your great emuna and never-diminished love for all, will see you through this and it doesn't have to be without your family and friends lifting and guiding you along the path as Aaron and Hur did when Moshe's arms were fatigued during the battle with Amalek. You are fighting the Amalek, within you that knows that your laughter and enthusiasm are raising up so many people with whom you have contact every day out of their own dark places. I know you will fight the fight and we have to all give you chizuk in these difficult days in return for all that you have given us! My prayers are with you. Love, Naph

  14. michael.. I could not finish writing early this am .. I wanted the right words and I was afraid to counter your words about your ship.. in my head and mind i said that is normal but the language your friends gave you will frame it for you differently. We all heard you and searched for the words to comfort you..and give you the strength to see you will be on smoother waters with hashem's guidance. That is not broken and will be a an even stronger level than could have been conceived and that you are united despite any physical separation. Your love for lisa and danielle and walks with adam every shabbat with joy is one beautiful place to go again again in your mind.. walk those steps again and read these amazing posts again and again..

    Not adrift -

I beg to differ - the current bad weather makes the visibility bad.

It is not a little ship but a huge battleship manned by its courageous Captain and his valiant crew.

Not only that, it is surrounded by an armada of other ships of relatives, clergy, and friends who are there to assist this battleship through the stormy waters.

  20. This email is from "Moved to tears" is from Apr 22, 2010 7:57 PM:

Mamash. Not tears of despair nor sadness. But rather tears the soul sends up to block our eyes from the mask of this world so we look inward at our tzelem elokim. You are teaching me/us the sanctity and elevation of the neshama, its transcendence and power.
Shabbos hi mi'lizok - shabbos is itself a healer. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you a gut shabbos!!!!!!

  21. my dear friend, michael,
it is tova and family from the nachlaot. i have not written since last shabbas, though you have been on my mind, daily and i continue to say tehillim for your health and well being. all of the angels here are flying high in honor of your strength and helping to fight your fight in a graceful, peaceful way For sure, you are being challenged with this latest diagnosis.
and you will no doubt beat this tumor as well.
tonight was log b omer and there were small bon fires all over as far as anyone could see. the fires were strong and bright and full of sparks heading up to the heavens.
my first bon fire, i ever saw was the one in your backyard last log b omer when pey dalid sang all night long..
you have given so much in so many ways to the our chevra and our community and now is a time for you to receive our blessings and our tefillot and to let hashem take care of you.
all our love to you, lisa, adam and danielle and with the best of health and getting stonger minute by minute,
    tova
