Lisa returned to Philadelphia yesterday and is thank G-d is on her way back to New York as I type these words.
When Lisa left.....I was truly alone for the first time since "moving" to New York. The decision to move here was built around the precaution of wanting to be as close as possible to my doctors and the team who were leading the effort to save my life.
One never knows what might arise that will require their immediate intervention to a complication or sudden turn.
It came as some surprise and greater concern yesterday afternoon when over the course of an exceedingly short amount of time my right forearm swelled, turned dark and started to burn from within. I could see that the source of this was the vein that had been used to feed the cisplatin and etoposide into my bloodstream for five days the previous week.
I immediately called the clinical "hotline" and swiftly walked the five or so blocks to Sloan Kettering's Urgent Care center.
After being seen by a nurse and doctor it was determined that an immediate ultra sound was necessary. The ultra sound showed superficial thromobophlebitis which for those like me out there is a superficial blood clot in the veins.
As I have learned, the fact of the matter is that the level of toxicity of the chemotherapy is so severe that it is as if molten lava is flowing into a river....burning everything in its wake.
Thankfully, 24 hours of hot compresses was all that was required and no blood thinners, which would have been had the blood clot been more severe.
Lisa had called several times during my three hours in urgent care but I never once told her of my situation not wanting to worry her. Only on my walk back to the apartment did I reveal to her what had transpired.
So late last night......I was thrilled when my dear friend Elliot Holtz showed up at my door unexpectedly and stayed with me in the apartment. His kindness and friendship were a welcome antedote to yesterday's "hiccup".
As I davened shaccarit this morning I was heartened when I read, "v"im ruchi geviati.....Adonai li v'lo ira"....."With my spirit shall my body remain. Hashem is with me, I shall not fear".
A bit further along in my tefillas at the exact moment that I started to recite the first words of the second section of The Shema....wherein it states....."that if you continually hearken to My commandments that I command you today, to LOVE Hashem, your G-d, and to SERVE Him, with ALL your heart and with ALL your soul"......at exactly that moment....my cell phone rang and I knew I had to answer......and on the other line .......the sweetest of sweet voices.....one of the great Rabbinical Gadols of our generation.....in the softest tone.....calling to ask me....."how are you feeling?"......."when can you come home?".......
I was so humbled....
I know that Hashem loves me.......whatever the outcome.......
and I know that "ufrosh aleinu sucat shlomecha"......"that He spreads over me the shelter of His peace".
I and we are not alone!!!!!
HASHEM LOVES US!!!!!!
B'simcha

Michael, Lisa is so fortunate to have a husband who expresses his emptiness of heart when she is not near! And how fortunate are you to know what a huge part of your heart she is! Kol Tuv and blessings, Janis

ReplyDeleteMichael:
It's funny the way things happen. I sat down to write you and I picked up the Hayom Yom. I opened to where my book mark was placed. Today is the 20th of Iyar, my book mark for no reason was placed at the 17th of Iyar. The Alter Rebbe wrote " On Lag B'Omer about 5604 (1844) the Tzemach Tzedek related this teaching of the Baal Shem Tov: "For you (Israel) shall be a land of desire, says the L-rd of Hosts.' Just as the greatest scientists will never discover the limits of the enormous natural resources which the Almighty has sunk into the land (everything came from the earth), neither will anyone ever find the limits of the great treasures which lie within the Jew-G-d's "land of desire."
The Baal Shem Tov concluded: I want to make Israel yield the kind of produce which the Almighty's "land of desire" is capable of yielding."
Elliot shopwing up unexpectly, your Gadol calling you, your now further understanding of verses of Shema, Lisa and your children keeping their strength, all those that daven, say Tehillim, write on this blog, etc., are all examples of what is yielded from this "land of desire" with natural resources without limit. You are experiencing suffering right now, but are tapped into those resources as many of us have never experienced. Keep tapping into them, Hashem's eyes are on you.
Be well.
Michael, Jody, Max & Sophie

Michael,
ReplyDeleteWe have just finished learning together over that miracle of technology known as Skype, where I can talk to you and see your holy face as we speak! As Rav Dessler says, our technology is nothing more than a gift from Hashem and when used properly is a blessing, but often we forget the Source and turn these blessings into the curses of our world such as nuclear energy into hydrogen bombs! It was wonderful learning with you and seeing you smile and light up as we learned Behar and Bechuckosai. We saw that the challenge of being a Yid is bitachon - the bitachon that when we enter the Land and plant our bounty that we must let the Land rest for its Shabbos and that we did not do that for 70 cycles and hence when the Babylonian exile came it lasted 70 years - measure for measure. You are the model of bitachon and we should and are learning much from your courage and the words of inspiration you share with us daily. I then came to this site and read of your scare yesterday - it was scary, but now it is past, Lisa is back with you waving to me as I speak to you, and you smiling as if nothing happened! I love you brother and am so very thankful to Hashem that you have chosen me as your friend and that I have the z'chus to learn with you. Naph
Michael,
ReplyDeleteIt goes without saying that you shouldn't have to face this ordeal alone. Although we are not with you physically, please know that we are with you in thought and spirit. We're so glad that the most recent hiccup was just that. Fight on.

Hey man......the thought of you walking brisk in the early May NYC afternoon alone, breaks my heart....I recall many of your treks however, to mountain tops to beaches, to Deal New Jersey summer glory heat wave, 1986....one of your first long days with Lisa, to upstate Pennsylvania farm where we tossed hay bails and sweated in the humidity of summer dusk....even then together, you maintained a religious solitude years before you became the man you are today....
ReplyDeleteI am and will always be, somewhere close keeping an eye on you.......
continued love and support.....
Howard and of course, love from Cindy.
hope you have an easy day today..spoke with Lisa yesterday..great to hear her voice..miss you all..stay strong and positive,,waiting for you to come to Seattle so that we can hike Rainier together

Michael, I noticed your up to 103 followers and that's only the people who actually register. Your congregation is building quickly. Imagine if Rabbi Akiva had a blog. You're elevating us all.
ReplyDeletethanks,
A
Hoping today is a better day for you. We're still with you!
ReplyDeleteall our love,

Michael,
ReplyDeleteHey brother- how are you doing? You are so amazing. No matter what happens, you are always b'simcha. Your emunah inspires me so much!
I want you to know that we had about 50 people all say 'Amen!' to a communal refuah shlaima bracha for you. Rabbi Motty Berger came to Aish last night and spoke about increasing our G-d consciousness and how doing so relieves suffering. He was great. Your emunah is creating major G-d consciousness- what a kiddush Hashem!
We think of you everyday Michael and are davening our hearts out for you. Keep fighting the good fight my brother. We are with you.
Can't wait to welcome you back home with a big hug, iy'H, very soon.
Regards to Lisa, Adam, and Danielle.
Love,
Kevin, Sharon, & Aaron Tzvi Ross & Roz
